I was not brought up in a Christian home but was encouraged to go to Durham Road Baptist Church by a friend. This was after Horticulture College and National Service. One day whilst working as a landscape gardener I accidentally got a nail impaled in my hand – my reaction to this pain was to realise how insignificant it was compared to what Jesus suffered on the cross for my salvation. This was certainly a defining moment in accepting Jesus as Saviour.
I began helping with Boys Brigade and after marriage to Ruth became involved with Sunday School as Superintendent and also with youth clubs and young people.
I was baptised and joined Church, later becoming a deacon and began speaking at smaller fellowships. Many years later I also became Church secretary and treasurer which Ruth and I shared together, as we have shared our lives together for over 50 years.
